Transcolation& Environmental motification

Transcolation& Environmental motification

Eastern grey kangaroos are not a threatened species. There is no conservation reason for translocating eastern grey kangaroos because the conservation status of the species is secure (ACT 2013). They are abundant across their range in eastern Australia. However, transcolation may cause lack of suitable release sitessuch as the availability of food supply, predators and habitat quality will limit the number of kangaroos that can survive on a new land (ACT 2013). These factors are often hard to identify but are the reason that most proposed sites turn out to be unsuitable when evaluated by qualified ecologists (ACT 2013).

Genetic impact-Culling& Fertilizing control

Culling may change the genetic structure and genetic diversity of a population. Concerns have also been expressed over theimpact of culling on the maintenance of genetic diversity and fitness, particularly bythe selective removal of big males.

Fertilizing control can successfully reduce the reproduction in female Eastern Grey Kangaroos but there come with behavioral side effects to females. From the research, malesprefer groups with more untreated females, which suggest that the fertilization treatment may result in higher male mobility. Thismay increase the risk of collisions with vehicles when the population of kangaroos targeted forcontraceptioninhabits areas close to roads supporting heavy traffic. This side effectshould be weighed against a likely decrease in the probability of road accidents due to lower population growth resulting from contraception treatment.

Economic & Agricultural

Clearing of land for cropping and pasture development, fencing and the introduction of livestock has influenced more than 95% of Australia’s vegetation.
Generally, areas protected from over-grazing by kangaroo contain greaterspecies diversity and vegetative biomass. Furthermore, where destocking is desired for rehabilitation purposes, kangaroos may negate any benefits from removing livestock, if kangaroo numbers are too high.
