SolidWorks Assignment (SP2 2013)
 
 
 
Introduction
This assignment is intended to provide students with the opportunity to put into practice and
demonstrate what they have learnt in the course. 
This assignment is worth 30% of the overall course mark. 
Please read carefully the following requirements for your assignment.
 
Assignment Requirements
The assignment  is based on the Engineers Without Borders Institute Challenge 2013 – Plan Timor
Leste.

This course is not creating an entry in the EWB Challenge but  is only using the topics as a basis for
the Engineering Drawing with SolidWorks assignment.
 
For the Major Assignment you can choose between the following topics:-
1.  Infrastructure and Construction
Design of a child friendly space with play equipment with areas for pre-school and school aged
children.  You are to develop play equipment (at least 2 play activities. E.g. slide, swing, climbing wall
that can be individual items or integrated into one piece of equipment) and place them in a play area
bounded by a fence.
2.  Water supply, sanitation and hygiene
Design of a composting toilet and hand wash facility.  You are to develop a facility with composting
toilet, water tank with pipes to a hand washing basin and soap holder.
3.  Transportation
Design a cheap form of transport for students to use to get to school.  You are to develop a bicycle
that can be either pedal or pedal/electric battery powered.  You are to develop the frame, wheels with
rubber tyres and drive mechanism.

Each student must submit, using the ePortfolio template “COMP 1036 SolidWorks Assignment”,
the following via the learnonline file repository: -
1.  A description of the  items modelled, materials chosen and  the modelling techniques used  (150
to 250 words). 
2.  A zip folder of files including (items a to e, below):-
a.  All SolidWorks models (part, assembly and drawing files). All parts and assemblies are
to be given a part number in the format of “Username xx” where xx is a 2 digit number
series (e.g. 01, 02, 03 etc)
b.  Five detailed A3 sized part drawings for selected parts that show:-
i.  Dimensioning and linear tolerancing (all drawings) 
ii.  Geometric tolerancing (on at least 1 drawing)
iii.  Limits and fits (on at least 1 drawing)
iv.  Surface finish (on at least 1 drawing)
 
Use 1 part per drawing sheet, each with a completed title block containing AS1100,
3rd angle projection, sheet size, part number and description.  
c.  An assembly drawing of the design with a bill of materials in  the  top RH corner and
item numbers in balloons, detailed to AS1100.  This drawing is to include a section view. 
d.  An exploded view drawing of the design with a bill of materials in top RH corner and
item numbers in balloons to AS1100.  
e.  All other files created for the assignment.
Note: All SolidWorks engineering drawings must be in pdf or jpg format with a resolution that
can be clearly read. 
3.  Two  high resolution photo rendered jpg images  (up to 2MB)  of the  design. One with  a plain
background and the other with an appropriate background image (typical local scene).   A visible
decal is to be included on the model.
4.  An avi animation of the  item moving in operation or being assembled (up to 10 MB) for at least
10 seconds.  
5.  A self reflection on learning and achievements from the course (50 to 100 words).
