typography
• Illustrate effective responses to typefaces in contemporary
branding
• Explain the implications of information architecture (hierarchy).
Description
You are asked to design and produce an ePublication and a set of
three publishing company logos.
You are asked to work with the supplied grid and document
structure to produce a series of interactive pages featuring the
work of one influential type designer.
Background
In visual communication, whether on paper or a screen, the grid is
visible to those who look for it. The grid is simply a way of dividing
up the space so that your design elements can communicate in
the most effective way with the minimum amount of confusion for
the viewer. A grid is a tool that enables you to consistently repeat
elements but without them becoming boring to the eye.
Often, a layout that to uninformed eye is a random arrangement
of photographs, type and space is seen quite differently once its
grid structure has been pointed out. The perceptual shift can be
quite dramatic: what had seemed arbitrary suddenly looks
immutable.
Details
Stage 1 Working with the grid
Use the document and grid supplied in the resource folder. You
should use the body copy, typeface and images supplied to
create your ePublication. The design components you will be
working with are:
• Headings (The typeface name)
• Sub-headings (The designer’s name)
• Body copy
• Pull quote (some information about the typeface)
• Captions for the images
• A title for the booklet
• Issue number
• Publisher logo
• Break out panels and images.
You may change the size of the text. All the other elements may
also be enlarged or reduced depending on your particular layout
choices. However, you must adhere to the principles of the grid.
What’s in the ePublication:
Page 1: Front cover
• Title of booklet
• Featured typeface name
• Issue number
• Image (optional)
Page 2 – Content
• Typeface name as heading
• Designer’s name and dates
• Hero and secondary images with captions (images can be
cropped & enlarged to different sizes)
• Body copy, 1 or 2 columns wide
• ‘Stand First’ or ‘Pull Quote’ (A sentence of the body copy that is
made larger for emphasis)
• Folio marks
(The page or text frames should be scalable in length to
accommodate the text length)
Page 3 – Content
• Typeface name as a running header or footer (it will be smaller
than the heading and less prominent in position)
• 2 images (minimum) and captions (images can be cropped &
enlarged to different sizes)
• Body copy, 1 or 2 columns wide (Use the remainder of the text)
• Break out panel
• Folio marks
(The page or text frames should be scalable in length to
accommodate the text length)
Page 4 – Back cover
• Publisher logo (See Stage 3)
• Contact information (mock URL and address of publishing
company)
• Image (optional)
Stage 2 Add interactivity
Due to the delivery format of a screen-based publication, the
inclusion of interactivity can add depth and engagement to static
text and imagery. Within the page structure and content you could
include examples such as:
• An image slideshow
• Pop-up content
• Animation
• Hyperlink to external web site or email link
• Video
Stage 3 Create your publisher’s logo
The series of publisher’s logos build upon the semester’s early in-
class exercises. The name of the publisher must contain the word
‘FACE”. Suggestions: About Face Publishers, Face First
Publishing, Off Ya’ Face Publishing, Face Ache Publishing.
Choose one of these or make up your own!
You will design and submit a set of three logos for this publisher,
with the strongest being incorporated into the back cover of the
ePublication. You will also use this logo as part of Assessment
