Reflective Journal
The well-known Hawthorne studies revolutionarily result in emergence of human relations theory which is regarded as an important milestone in the development of management science. This behavioral science theory is designed to solve problems using comprehensive management skills. The study of people in organization enables me to have a specific understanding about the importance of human relations in workplace and how it promotes productivity within a corporation. A few years later, I will embrace my career. Thus such kind of practical science is critical and instructive for me to draw lessons from.

The impact of motivation

As early as I was in high school, I found a regular pattern from my own experience that we are more likely to have relatively high scores on some of the subjects as long as teachers show high expectations on us. One may have similar experience that when you are at school, you may work harder on some of the subjects, depending on the preferences towards teachers. Later, through studying text book, I found corresponding theory for my experience. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, the five levels of needs are presented in a shape of pyramid, with the need for self-actualization on the top. Never underestimate the impact of motivation, it can enormously promote your self-esteem, saving you from fear and humble.
 
I was once a mediocre student, and always got low scores in exams. It seems that no teachers really cared about me at the time. Instead, they tend to focus on those top students. I was nearly convinced that I would stay mediocre forever until a new English teacher transferred to my class and changed my destiny. She often asked me questions in class, and frequently praised me for my cleverness. I began to love English and gradually regain self confidence in studying other subjects. I believe that is the power of motivation, perhaps manifest in a positive comment or a simple compliment.
 

Attitude is everything

The sentence spread around China due to a successful coach called Bora Milutinovic who led the Chinese national football team qualified for the world cup 2002, just like a dream come true for the first time in the past 44 years. Milutinovic exercised the philosophy of ‘attitude is everything’ and encouraged his players to hold a positive attitude towards each game. As a result, with enhanced morale they beat many stronger teams. This philosophy is also applicable to management in organizations. Success in career often relies on your personal attitude. Those who hold positive attitude towards work may easily enjoy pleasure and becomes the leader in his company. On the contrary, those who always complain about things and work with emotions would hardly achieve success.

Who am I?

That is a question raised in a famous book called “Sophie’s World”, a question being discussed over and over again, but actually no one can answer thoroughly. Or in another word, what role am I playing as? Right now, I was pretty sure that I was a student in college. In a few years, my role would be changed into employee. However, who is that real girl inside of me? What is my real interest? In order to find the answer, I start to try to search into my soul from an objective point of view.  Assuming I look at me in the mirror, inside there was a normal girl with kindness and compassion. Sometimes a little bit cynical, unable to hold back emotions. She has a natural talent in mathematics, and careful enough when dealing with figures. These characters qualify her as an accounting major student. In order to approach to the answer of question: who am I as much as possible, it is highly recommended that one should form the habit of appreciating oneself, since you can become what you expect if you believe in yourself.

The kind of leader I would like to be

Last summer, I found a part-time job in a restaurant as a waitress. I dedicated to my job at first, until one day I can hardly bear my sarcastic boss who was so harsh on us and being stingy in compliment no matter how well we have performed. Most of the employees felt resentful towards him. Soon, I quit the job, swearing I would never treat my employees like this. The restaurant owner set a negative example to me, reminding me that being a good leader you are supposed to maintain high morale in workforce by reasonable reward and penalties.
 
In the age of modern information and technology, competitiveness is becoming more and more intense day after day. A certificate is no longer a golden ticket to a successful career. Interpersonal skill is seen as soft skill to help you find a job. I have always depicted such a picture about my future. In a few years, I will graduate and embrace my career, probably working in one of the World top 500, where mutual trust and efficient teamwork are highly valued. I would like to challenge myself in a diversity workforce, where I can enjoy my work and be productive at it. I will respect every single colleague and commit to form an effective team.
 
In distant future, I may luckily become a leader of an organization. First of all, there would be no prejudice in my company, since I have witnessed so many injustices through my life, and was even one of the victims. Moreover I have always wanted to be the kind of charismatic leader who can influence members to perform beyond expectations or create sense of belonging among workers. However, charisma is often regarded as innate feature. In this case, human relations skill is critical to use. If I were the leader, I would implement diversity management among employees, our selection principle is open and fair, moreover employees are encouraged to be innovative without worrying about they will be discriminated or humiliated. Since the atmosphere with social and cultural inclusiveness is what I really cherish. Last but not the least, employees would find pleasure in their work. Happiness is the biggest source of self actualization.
