Individual Case Essay – Instructions
Contribution
?  25% of the course grade.
Purpose
?  The case essay requires you to provide an analysis, diagnostic, recommendation, and action plan for 1 of the 5 cases that
will be discussed in class and in the tutorials during the trimester.
?  The cases are found in your student notes. You need to provide an essay for:
o  Week 5: Vermont Teddy Bear (SN#L) or
o  Week 6: Chard Farm (SN#M) or
o  Week 7: J-Trading (SN#N) or
o  Week 8: Alvalade XXI (SN#P) or
o  Week 9: Knowledge Management at TPA (SN#Q).
Instructions
?  To complete the briefs, you need to apply the guidelines on how to analyze cases covered in the lectures and the required
readings of weeks 2, 3 and 4.
?  Your essay will be of about 3 000 words, which means that it should be between 5 to 6 pages long, but absolutely no
longer than 6 pages of text in font size 11 or 12. If your case brief is longer than 6 pages of text, we will mark only the
first 6 pages. The only content allowed beyond these six pages is figures and a list of references.
?  Your case essay needs to be uploaded to Blackboard by Tuesday, 3pm of your chosen weeks. For example, if you opt to
do a brief for the case “Vermont Teddy Bear” in week 5, you need to upload your document by Tuesday, August 13 at
3pm, and if you opt for “Chard Farm” in week 6, you need to upload your document by Tuesday, August 20 at 3am. No
extension will be allowed regarding this deadline.
?  Keep in mind that you need to assess the case’s situation in order to determine what answer to propose. There is no
obvious right or wrong answer to the cases. The cases are deliberately ambiguous and lacking in information, like most
business dilemmas in the “real world.” What we will be looking for when reading your case essay is your ability to:
o  identify and diagnose the key elements of the business/IS/e-commerce problem or situation faced by the firm or
decision maker in the case;
o  select appropriate and relevant frameworks to analyse and diagnose the complication faced by the firm or
decision makers in the case, as well as to identify and assess alternatives.
o  propose and justify a recommendation and a short action plan based on logic, argumentation, and evidence.
Remember that the answer to the case is not found within the case. Instead, you need to use your critical and creative
thinking skills to define and to argue for one.
?  You are strongly encouraged to:
o  apply frameworks, concepts, data, etc., from other courses you have followed at Victoria to develop your
analysis and your recommendations;
o  support your analysis and recommendations with data, quotes, news, statistics, figures, from newspapers, trade
magazines, websites, reports found through the library’s databases [see Blackboard for a list of relevant
sources]. Please quote appropriately if you do so. A reader of your essay needs to be able to find the exact
document that you consulted in a matter of seconds. The following website shows you how to format the
references in your bibliography (which does not count toward the allowed 3 000 words):

?  This assignment assesses the Faculty Learning Objectives on written communication, creative thinking and critical
thinking.
