2. The rest of the assignment
You are to assume the responsibility of building a web site for a business of your choice.
This business must be engaged in providing products and services, such as a hotel, a
retail store (book shop, spare parts ...), an online auction site, or an IT service. If you have
concerns about whether your proposal meets the requirements, contact the lecturer.
Do not reproduce existing business web sites, nor copy an existing business in any form.
The business has decided to expand its operations into on-line business via the Internet,
and the website will ultimately provide the business with a convenient method of
disseminating information about their products and services as well as on-line ordering.
In this assignment, you are to develop a complete web site using HTML. You are to
develop a corporate image and web site navigation structure to suit the nature of the
chosen business, and you can decide how many different pages will be created, as long as
the web site includes the following content:
Information about the business
Products and Services descriptions including a reasonable range of products
(“things to sell”) and services (“actions to sell”).
Contact relevant contact information
Disclaimer disclaimer and other relevant terms and conditions; In addition to the
above content, the following statement MUST be included at the bottom of ALL
web pages developed.
This web page has been developed as a student assignment for the
unit SIT104: Introduction to Web Development. Created by (your
name) “Your name” should be a link to the page about you.
You are given an open license to design and develop a web site using HTML. However,
you should use technology wisely in its development. Careful use of graphics,
backgrounds, and text will help to create an effective site; poor use will greatly diminish
the overall impact. It is important that your website implements those technical features
listed in Section 3. This version of your system should have no server-side scripting.
Flash is not allowed!
3. Assignment Requirements
Your web pages should satisfy user’s requirements as in the previous sections, and have
the following features:
? all pages should have a proper title, and meta tags for keywords;
? all pages must be valid HTML;
? atleast one page should have a table
i.  set the background color for the entire table
ii.  set the background color for a table cell
iii.  demonstrate the use of rowspan and colspan attributes
? set the background color of each page
? company logo and MIBT logo on each page
? atleast one external link which will open in a new browser window (do not use
Javascript)
? each code file must contain a comment at the top with the following information:
i. your name and Student ID number
ii. assignment for which the code is written
iii. a general comment describing the code
4. Marking Criteria
Final marks of the assignment will depend on the quality and creativity of your web
design, web authoring, and web programming. Your submission will be evaluated
according to the following criteria:
? Webby Criterion We will mainly check the Content, the Structure and
Navigation, the Visual Design, the Functionality, the Interactivity and the Overall
Experience.
? W3C Validity Your HTML pages must all be valid according to W3C validation
tools. A single “error” will result in the loss of all marks allocated to this part;
Much of the marking for the aesthetic aspects of the web sites is subjective; what one
person finds attractive might very well be unappealing to the next viewer. We will try to
keep this in mind as we grade. Nonetheless, for maximum aesthetic points, you must
have a site that looks professional and appealing to most viewers. Ask yourself the
following before turning in your URL:
? Will the site appeal to my target audience?
? Does the site convey the message I want it to convey?
? Have I chosen an attractive color scheme of 2-3 colors (rarely will more colors
look coordinated) and used them consistently throughout my site?
? Have I chosen a layout and used it consistently or with only justifiable
modifications on every page?
? Is my content grammatically correct? Is the spelling correct?
? Do I have a navigation method that allows the user to form a mental map of the
site and get to different pages in my site quickly and easily?
? Does the site share characteristics of professional sites that I have seen and liked?
? Does my site look professional?
Submission
All the files should be zipped and uploaded to the myMibt website by the due date (Limit
of 5Mb applies).
Further Reminders
You must provide some form of navigation (menu) to move from one page in the site to
another and include this on all pages. All pages should conform to good XHTML
coding.
Include a comment on every page within the <head> tag that says:
This website has been designed by (your name) as an assignment in the subject SIT104 at
MIBT, Trimester 1, 2013. The information contained within is for educational purposes only
and should not be used commercially.
When you are designing each page you should remember that you must maintain a
corporate feel to each page and keep things such as menu navigation bars and fonts and
colors consistent. Marks will be allocated for consistency and corporate feel. You should
also ensure that you follow general good web design techniques and follow generally
acceptable rules for accessibility including the use of appropriate “title” information and
“alt” attributes. Include meta data for keywords on the index.html page. Do not use any
frames or stylesheets for this site. All pages should be created using a text editor and
html coding. Marks will be deducted for typing errors.
Any page where you must scroll vertically should include a link back to the top of the
page.
Before you begin to develop this site you should plan it! Think about questions such as:
? What is the purpose of this site?
? Who is my audience?
? What is the general layout of each page?
? How will my menu work?
? How will I provide a consistent look to each page?
You are not given a company logo but you are encouraged to create one.
You should include some images on this site to make it more attractive.
