Individual Assignment
A.  Scope
Students undertaking this assignment are required to individually research, analyse, and complete a
report that will demonstrate their understanding of designing process architectures using various
approaches for a specific business case.
This assignment will evaluate students’ ability to: 
?  identify business processes and explain the link between an organisation’s strategy and their
business processes; and
?  apply various approaches and techniques to design process architectures.
Students are expected to conduct a comprehensive analysis of a business case and support their
responses and arguments with additional sources, available from academic and industry/ practice-
based communities. At the completion of this assignment students should have developed a sound
knowledge and understanding of the role of process architectures in BPM initiatives.

Assume you have been hired as process analyst to the assist University of Sydney with a number of
BPM initiatives associated with the current strategy of new information systems implementations. The
first task to be undertaken is to design a process architecture that reflects operations within University
of Sydney as a context for a more detailed exploration of student services.
To assist you with the task, you are required to use a reference model developed by the American
Productivity and Quality Center (APQC). Specifically you are asked to refer to APQC's Process
Classification Framework for Education K-12. This framework is available for free download after
registration from: http://www.apqc.org/process-classification-framework. In addition you can use the
more generic cross-industry framework, APQC's Process Classification Framework, also available for
free download from the same website. Note that these frameworks are reference models and they
may need to be adapted to the context of higher education, and specifically to the University of
Sydney.

The university would like to use your report and associated models as the basis for the following:
?  General discussion within the university regarding the overall strategy.
?  Overall understanding of the process architecture at the University of Sydney.
?  Specific understanding of the process landscape model/s (level 1) for Student Support Services
and a number of key process maps (level 2).
Your task is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the above case. Specific components and tasks
you are required to undertake in this project are detailed below. Make sure you do not make generic
statements or develop generic models. They have to be relevant and applied to the University of
Sydney case.

process contributes towards the university strategy.

For University of Sydney Student Support Services, develop a Process
architecture using Dijkman‘s approach. Specifically:
?  Identify and justify the case types;
?  Identify and justify the business functions;
?  Develop and explain the case/ function matrix/ces; and
?  Identify processes by explaining how the guidelines from Dijkman’s
approach are applied to derive the level 1 process landscape
model/s.

Develop Process maps (level 2) using IBM WebSphere Modeler for
two of the processes you identified above that relate to 1) student
health services, and 2) career/ employment support services at the
University of Sydney:
?  Provide a brief description of the two processes and their
outcomes;
?  Develop Websphere models for:
?  Organisational chart capturing the business functions identified
in the process architecture
?  Two level 2 processes maps displayed by business functions
swimlanes.

Compare and contrast Dijkman’s and Harmon’s approaches to
designing process architectures by discussing both the advantages
and disadvantages of the two approaches.

Edition, Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, Burlington, MA, USA. The
