HPS 304 – The Social Psychology of Relationships
Assignment 1
Due date (on and off campus): Wednesday 11 September, 2013 @ 5pm
Submitted via dropbox on HPS304/784 site
Weighting:  35%
Requirements:  written assignment (1500 words)
Assignment topic
This assignment (on ideal standards) has been designed to provide you with:
a. the opportunity to apply theory and research in social psychology to the
development of a self-help resource for the general public
•  (this addresses the graduate attributes related to the application of knowledge
and the development of communication skills [in this instance writing to a lay
audience as well as scientific writing])
b. experience in organising and synthesising relevant information for use by the
general public
•  (this addresses graduate attributes related to being able to selectively choose
relevant material and organise it in a coherent way so that others can make
sense of a complex topic)
Type of assessment
This is a written assessment and consists of two parts – part (a) and part (b). Part (a)
is the actual self-help guide and part (b) is a short essay designed to provide
justification for the material included in the self-help guide and the choice of
references integrated as part of the self help guide.
A self-help guide was chosen as the activity for assessment because pop culture is
filled with hundreds of ‘self-professed’ relationship experts given advice to people
seeking information and help for relationships. However, much of the self-help
literature is produced by people with little education in relationship science offering
advice which either doesn’t match up with research or is just down-right dangerous
advice.
The time has come to stem the tide and the onus falls on us as relationship scholars.
To this end, you have been charged with the task of putting together a self-help guide
written for the lay person on the “top five tips in choosing and evaluating a
relationship partner”. This will be accompanied by a short essay that will be written in
the typical scientific writing style you have used in the past in psychology. This essay
will provide an argument for the tips included in the self-help guide and the evidence
that you have drawn upon in the research literature on ideal standards to develop
these tips.

Assessment Objectives
1. To develop a self-help guide that demonstrates your understanding of topic of
ideal standards.
2. To practice two different types of writing – writing in a simple manner for the
lay person and writing in a scientific manner to provide a rationale for the
content included in the self help guide.
3. To provide you with an activity that fosters deep learning of the topic of ideal
standards
Setting the stage – what are the steps associated with completing the assignment
1.  For all students, the assignment will be discussed in week 3 during seminar 2.
During the seminar we will go over this document and clarify issues regarding
the assignment. For students who are unable to attend seminar 2, and for
those who would like to go over certain material again, please note that you will
have the opportunity to review a recording of the seminar (Echo System) will be
uploaded on Cloud Deakin.
2.  At the end of the seminar 2, students will be in a position to commence
researching and writing up their assignment.
Assignment components
HPS 304 – The Social Psychology of Relationships  代寫
The assignment will consist of two components – part (a) and part (b). Each section
is described in detail below.
Part (a): The self-help guide which will be titled “top five tips in choosing and
evaluating a relationship partner” (50% – 500 words)
In this part of the assignment you need to develop a self-help guide that assists
people in the community with no formal education in psychology or relationship
studies to make good choices in choosing and evaluating a romantic partner. As part
of this guide you will provide five tips to the general community
You need to confine your inclusion of material in the guide to research on ideal
standards (topic of lecture 1). Otherwise there is a risk you will include too much
diverse information that will make it hard to integrate into one short and simple-to-
read guide.
The assessment of part (a) will consist of two components – content and
presentation. These components and their assessment weightings are described
next.
3
Content (35%)
The guide should include four distinct sections. These are outlined below:
1. Introduction: Provide a short introduction to the topic of choosing and
evaluating a relationship partner and what is the purpose of the self-help
guide.
2. Ideal standards: Given that the tips you derive are based on the ideal
standards model, it is important to provide information to the reader about the
ideal standards model. This content should include:
•  A description of the partner ideals
•  A description of partner-ideal discrepancies
•  How discrepancies can help us evaluate our partners and ourselves
•  A description of partner-ideal flexibilities
•  How flexibility can influence discrepancies and evaluation of our
partners
3. Five tips: Provide the five tips in a separate section in the guide. The tips
should encompass the following:
•  Tips should be based on research conducted on the ideal standards
model.
•  Each tip should be fairly short.
•  Provide a rationale for each tip. Often tips are given but people don’t
understand why a certain tip is given. So it is important for people to
know why something is recommended.
o  You can provide the rationale in one of two ways: (1)The rationale
for a given tip can immediate follow the respective tip, or (2) The
rationale for each of the tips can be presented in another section
of the guide.
4.  Additional resources: In this section you need to provide about three to
four resources that people can look up if they want more information on
the topic. In thinking about resources to choose, consider the following:
•  The resources you choose need to be appropriate for the lay
persons.
•  The resources can take multiple forms such as:
o an easy to read article or book,
o a website
o a video on the web (yes, you can include a youtube video)
o an organisation that provides relationship education
•  Each resource should be accompanied by a description about the
resource that tells the reader what the resource is about. This
should be no more than a sentence of two.
4
Presentation (15%)
The presentation format of the guide can take any form you like providing that the
page size is no bigger than A4 (you can use more than one A4 page however). Keep
in mind the following:
•  You want to create a self-help guide that is eye-catching and professional (so
use your creative side – colours, fonts, borders, whatever you wish)
•  You want the guide to be a practical size so that it is easy to pick-up and read
•  You do not want a guide that filled with a lot of dense text that makes it hard to
read
•  You do not want the font size to be so small the someone would have trouble
reading it
HPS 304 – The Social Psychology of Relationships  代寫
•  Organise the material in a way that there is a nice conceptual flow. You don’t
want to have the reader needing to jump to different parts of the guide to try to
make sense of what you are saying and how it is all linked.
Part (b): A short essay designed to provide justification for the material
included in the self-help guide and the choice of references integrated as part
of the self help guide. (50% – 1000 words)
As with most essays, regardless of length, an essay consists of three broad parts –
an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion. This is then followed by a reference
list. Each section of the essay as it pertains to this assignment is described below.
• Introduction (10%) – State why a self-help guide for choosing and evaluating
a relationship partner is required. Include the following:
o Draw on various statistics about how many relationships end in
dissolution and so choosing and assessing a partner carefully is
important in enhancing relationship success and longevity (5%).
o Comment on the quality of self-help resources currently in pop
culture and therefore why your guide is needed. Find evidence to
support your claim (5%).
• Main body (30%) – In this section you need to draw on the research literature
to support your case for why the ideal standards model is used as an orienting
framework for the self-help guide and to support your case for the five tips you
present in the guide. Include the following:
o A rationale as to why the ideal standards model useful in
understanding partner selection (5%).
o Briefly describe the ideal standards model with a focus on the three
partner ideals (5%).
5
o Briefly discuss how discrepancies and flexibility influence relationship
evaluation and the evidence to support the existence of partner-ideal
discrepancies and flexibility and their use in relationships (10%).
o List the five tips and discuss the evidence used to derive the five tips.
It may be best to list each tip and then provide an argument, drawing
on the evidence, to convince the reader that your tip is sound and
based on relationship science (10%).
• Conclusion (5%) – In this section you should provide a brief paragraph that
highlights the value of your self-help guide and how by grounding it in the
ideal standards model it provides an evidence-based resource for lay
persons.
• Reference list & APA format (5%) – list all the references used in the essay.
Aside from the target reading, it is up to you to find other references regarding
the ideal standards model.
o Your reference list will be marked on the relevance of the material
you cite and that it demonstrates you have searched the literature.
o There is no limit as to the references you are to use. Be aware
however, that the quality of your essay will most likely reflect the
references you have used, so an inadequate use of referencing is
likely to bring your mark in other sections of your essay down.
o You must make sure that your report adheres to APA style (minor
marks will be deducted for not adhering to this format). To assist
with this please refer to the following references:

Australia: Thomson Learning Australia.

Word Count
The 1500 word count is divided into two parts. Part (a) the self help guide accounts
for 500 words. The word count for this part of the assignment includes the title, the
main text, the additional resources, words in tables. Only words in pictures are not
included in the word count.
Part (b) the short essay accounts for 1000 words. The word count for this part of the
assignment includes the introduction, main body and conclusion. The word count
does not include words that appear as part of citations (quotes), in text referencing,
reference list, subheadings, or words that appear in tables or figures. Students who
go over 10% of the total world limit will be penalised. There is no penalty for going
under the word limit.

Starting Reading for the Assignment
You are provided with one reading to get you started on the topic. This reading the
Tran et al. (2008) reading from topic 1.

Assignment Tips
•  To assist with the development of your self-help guide both in terms of writing style
and presentation, search on the internet and have a look at what various self-help
guides look like.
o  Go to the websites of more reputable organizations that provide self-help
advice.
o  For instance go to the Relationships Australia website, beyondblue and the
Family Relationships site of the Australian Government. These sites may give
you some good ideas about how to structure and present your self help guide.
•  Take the time to have a search and see if you come across any self-professed
relationships experts and see what they have to say. Some have their own
websites or blogs, while others make constant youtube videos. Get a feel for what
they say and how it doesn’t reflect what we know about relationship science.
•  Start researching your assignment now. This is not the type of assignment that you
can whip up in a few hours or pull an all-nighter. Your self-help guide will need
planning and redrafting as will your essay.
•  After putting your guide together, test it out on family and friends – see if they think
it makes sense and is easy to read. If they ask questions about why you’ve
developed particular tips, give them the reasons you’ve crafted in your essay. This
will give you a sense how your guide it working and whether your rationale for its
content is well developed.

A Final Note…
•  Try to do your best on the assignment as you can then use your self-help guide as
evidence of your applied psychology skills. List this activity in your CV and keep a
copy that you can include as part of your professional portfolio.
